How to Tell the Difference Between Real Advice and AI Hype
How to spot AI hype (without becoming cynical)

Hello,
If you’ve felt overwhelmed by the amount of AI advice out there right now, you’re not alone.
The conversation around AI has become loud very quickly. Headlines promise dramatic change. Social media rewards certainty and speed. And much of what’s being shared leaves very little room for nuance, reflection, or uncertainty.
That environment makes it harder to think clearly.
When everything sounds urgent, it becomes difficult to tell what actually matters.
One helpful place to start is to notice how AI advice lands with you. Not whether it sounds impressive or confident — but how it makes you feel after you’ve taken it in.
Advice rooted in hype tends to create pressure. It often suggests that there is a narrow window of time to act, learn, or adopt something new. The message may not be stated directly, but the implication is there: if you hesitate, you’re missing out.
Real guidance usually feels different. It slows things down instead of speeding them up.
Hype-driven AI advice often:
Frames technology as inevitable and unstoppable
Uses absolute language (“everyone will need this”)
Minimizes risks or ignores limitations
Treats hesitation as ignorance or fear
More trustworthy guidance tends to:
Acknowledge uncertainty and tradeoffs
Explain limits as clearly as benefits
Leave space for personal judgment
Respect that people have different needs and timelines
One question I’ve found helpful is this:
Does this advice help me think more clearly, or does it make me feel rushed?
Good information should increase your sense of agency — your ability to choose, evaluate, and decide. If something makes you feel small, behind, or anxious, that’s worth paying attention to.
AI can be genuinely useful. It can also be dramatically oversold. Those two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
You’re allowed to take a middle path. You’re allowed to move slowly. You’re allowed to wait for clarity before adopting something new.
In a very loud conversation, calm thinking becomes a form of wisdom.
